ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW:

 

College Possible is a growing nonprofit coaching students from low-income backgrounds to and through college to break the cycle of poverty and empower the next generation of leaders. Our model has earned national recognition: the inaugural Evergreen National Education Award recognized our leadership in increasing access to and success in college for students from low-income backgrounds. It also earns top-of-field results: a Harvard study found that the program more than doubles a student's chance of enrolling in a four-year college, and our students are four times more likely to become college graduates than their low-income peers.

 

College Possible has a budget of $22 million, more than 140 full-time employees and more than 270 AmeriCorps and VISTA service members. During the 2018-19 school year, we will reach an estimated 25,000 students in all 50 states, at more than 90 partner high schools and more than 350 colleges.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Executive Director is responsible for the overall operations of the College Possible location in Philadelphia. The Executive Director Philadelphia serves as the external face of College Possible to the local community and the various stakeholders of College Possible.

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITES: 

 

OVERALL SITE MANAGEMENT

  • Serve as the general manager of the Philadelphia location and as the leader of the Philadelphia office and College Possible's work in the region while directly supervising the Program Director, Operations Specialist and Development Director and oversee a team that consists of additional development and program staff members along with several AmeriCorps staff members. 
  • Build and collaborate with the Local Advisory Board to develop a strategic plan for the site, and to maintain community relations, determine programmatic direction, identify potential supporters, and ensure program satisfaction. 
  • Instill and develop the organizational culture, one of the key components to our success as an organization. 
  • Provide active site leadership in all operational areas including human resources, budgeting, and finance/accounting, by working collaboratively with national staff members in support of these functions. 

 

FUNDRAISING AND EXTERNAL RELATIONS

  • Design and implement funding strategies to support for College Possible's programs in Philadelphia
  • In collaboration with national leadership, develop strategies to build and cultivate relationships with new individual donors and increase their level of engagement with the organization
  • Partner with the Development Associate to enhance relationships with new and current institutional partners including foundations and corporations
  • Serve as a thought-leader on issues of education and college success by participating in events and meetings with community partners, key foundation contacts and the school district
  • Continue to establish the College Possible brand identity in the community by overseeing marketing and communications efforts

 

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT

  • Oversee the work of the Program Manager to develop and implement the College Possible program in the local service area
  • With support from the National program team, maintain and enhance the standard for College Possible, both internally and externally, while ensuring fidelity to our program model and achieving key metrics 
  • Ensure appropriate evaluation of program efforts and maintain a results-focused orientation across every aspect of College Possible's work in Philadelphia

 

MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS

  • Helps to create College Possible brand identity in the community. Oversees marketing and communications efforts in the local community in close collaboration with the national communications department and the local External Relations & Operations Coordinator
  • Serves as the organization's main spokesperson in the community
  • Provides strategic direction for special events and media efforts

 

GENERAL SITE OPERATIONS

  • Provides active site leadership in all operational areas, including: human resources, information technology, facilities management, purchasing, budgeting, and finance/accounting.
  • Works collaboratively and in partnership with College Possible National HQ Staff.
  • Directs the work of the local External Relations & Operations Coordinator and ensures compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, rules, and College Possible policies and standards.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES ("MUST HAVES"):

A successful candidate for the Executive Director position will possess at minimum a significant number of years of relevant non-profit experience with corporate and/or non-profit institutions. This includes but is not limited to the following required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

 

  • Passion for the mission, vision and values of college preparatory, access and undergraduate matriculation and degree attainment ...
  • Demonstrated leadership competencies including but not limited to: Centered on the Mission; Builds a Flourishing Culture; Communicates Clearly and Directly, Extends and Builds Trust, Shows Courage, Uses Evidence to Drive Results and Develops Self and Others
  • Significant experience and success as a senior leader in an organization, including, but not limited to, success in building and enhancing organizational culture
  • Prior fundraising or development experience required, with proven track record of expanding an organization's donor base through collaborative relationship-building
  • Experience with the Philadelphia funder community is preferred
  • Evidence of a results orientation in management and a record of achieving desired outcomes
  • Excellent Board Development and stakeholder relationship management skills; strong collaborative, interpersonal, negotiation, persuasiveness and influencing capabilities

EDUCATION

 

  • Bachelor's degree required in a related field; Master's degree preferred
