College Possible is a growing nonprofit coaching students from low-income backgrounds to and through college to break the cycle of poverty and empower the next generation of leaders. Our model has earned national recognition: the inaugural Evergreen National Education Award recognized our leadership in increasing access to and success in college for students from low-income backgrounds. It also earns top-of-field results: a 2011 Harvard study found that the program more than doubles a student's chance of enrolling in a four-year college, and our students are four times more likely to become college graduates than their low-income peers.

College Possible has a budget of $24 million, more than 140 full-time employees and more than 270 AmeriCorps and VISTA service members. During the 2019-20 school year, we will reach an estimated 25,000 students in all 50 states, at more than 100 partner high schools and at more than 400 colleges.

Basic Description

 

As a member of the External Relations Team, the Marketing and Communications Associate generates community support, engages and grows College Possible Washington's audiences. Specific responsibilities include; developing communications and multimedia, including writing newsletter and e-news stories, leading social media strategy and implementation, managing relationships with the media, managing the website, public relations and community outreach.

 

Essential Job Functions

Communications: Provide leadership in communications strategy for current and prospective College Possible Washington supporters, along with internal audiences. Support the National communications team in its efforts to increase engagement through the College Possible website, news articles, email marketing and donate forms. Work with other External Relations Team members in Washington to develop communications for varying donor and partner groups. Responsibilities include tracking and reporting on results across all communications platforms.  

Social media and website management: Create and manage the social media strategy and content. Update the website on a regular basis with current data and stories.

Email marketing: Write and create emails and donate forms that increase personalized donor and volunteer experiences and ensure strong engagement and online fundraising measured through email open rates, clicks and online gifts.

Multimedia writing, content creation and design: Produce multimedia to tell College Possible's story through video, photography and design. Work with National staff on creating marketing materials, using InDesign and Photoshop, to support site-level donor, volunteer alumni and student communications objectives. 

Media relations: Write and distribute press releases to media list. Update media list, manage media relationships with community outlets and prepare staff, Corps and students for interviews and host media visits. Develop strategy for increasing media coverage of College Possible Washington. 

Outreach: Act as the key point of contact with external partners by fielding inquiries and requests, and coordinating media opportunities involving partner organizations and schools. Manage a general email account, directing questions to where they are best answered.

Professional Requirements (Skills & Qualifications)

Education/Certifications/Licenses:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications or related field.

 

Related Work Experience:

  • At least two years of full-time work experience required.
  • Exceptional writing skills and experience researching, proofreading and editing various types of communications, such as newsletters, e-newsletters, press releases, letters, etc.;
  • Strong conversational skills, including demonstrated comfort in working with students, alumni and donors;
  • Problem-solving skills, specifically with computers and design software;
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment;
  • Outstanding communication, organization, and time-management skills;
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple competing deadlines;
  • Goal-oriented and focused on outcomes;
  • Attention to detail in writing and copy-editing;
  • Passion for and demonstrated commitment to the College Possible mission and public service.

 

Computer/Software Skills:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Experience with fundraising databases (i.e. Raiser's Edge) preferred;
  • Experience with desktop publishing software (i.e. Adobe Creative Suite);
  • Social media strategy experience;
  • Photography and/or video skills a plus.

 

Other Skills, Abilities and Requirements:

  • Strong interest in communications, digital content marketing, fundraising, education and youth work;
  • Creative spirit to be able to tell College Possible's story across a variety of media;
  • Ability to work well with diverse types of people, and work well independently or in groups;
  • Ability to adapt to change, navigate uncertainty and handle potentially stressful situations calmly and appropriately;
  • Access to reliable transportation required;
  • Active attention to new and upcoming technologies and social platforms that College Possible should be utilizing;
  • Willingness to work some evenings and weekends.
