College Possible is a growing nonprofit coaching students from low-income backgrounds to and through college to break the cycle of poverty and empower the next generation of leaders. Our model has earned national recognition: the inaugural Evergreen National Education Award recognized our leadership in increasing access to and success in college for students from low-income backgrounds. It also earns top-of-field results: a 2011 Harvard study found that the program more than doubles a student's chance of enrolling in a four-year college, and our students are four times more likely to become college graduates than their low-income peers. College Possible has a budget of $22 million, more than 130 full-time employees and more than 270 AmeriCorps and VISTA service members. During the 2018-19 school year, we will reach an estimated 25,000 students in all 50 states, at more than 90 partner high schools and at more than 350 colleges.  

College Possible's growth and scaling strategy Catalyze holds the potential to reach tens to hundreds of thousands more low-income college students over the next decade. Through its Catalyze initiative, College Possible will build the capacity of colleges and universities to adopt and integrate its proven coaching model into their infrastructure to better support every low-income student on partner campuses. College Possible will train and support its post-secondary partners in hiring and managing near-peer coaches, thus leveraging high-quality existing staff to implement the College Possible model.

Basic Description

The College Program Coordinator helps coordinate College Possible programs by supervising, training and supporting six to ten AmeriCorps Members who work with our college students, all of whom are graduates of our high school program.

Essential Job Functions

Supervise, Train and Support AmeriCorps Members: Duties include providing daily support, guidance, and oversight to Corps members to ensure excellence in service, troubleshooting problems and issues as they arise, evaluating performance through check-ins and session observations, and working with other staff to ensure the highest quality of service to students, sites, and Corps members. The Program Coordinator helps to coordinate, evaluate, and summarize trainings for AmeriCorps members.

Develop and Maintain College Relationships: Work to build and maintain successful relationships with colleges by maintaining communication with key contacts at each school and coordinating service delivery to local campuses when necessary. Meet or talk with key contacts throughout the year to ensure program quality and successful communication as the organization's lead ambassador to assigned colleges.

Supervise AmeriCorps staff on Assertive Coaching and Ensure Program Quality: Duties include oversight of AmeriCorps staff outreach and support to College Possible college students for both first-year and upper class college students, train and hold accountable AmeriCorps staff  on assertive advising and coaching techniques; promote campus-based events focused on particular key issues such as FAFSA renewal, study skills, and course registration; and coordination of opportunities for our students to connect with employment and internship opportunities.

Evaluate, Track and Report on Progress: Lead the College Possible site's college team in tracking, evaluation and reporting of College Possible outcomes as related to our college programming goals, and identify and recruit students and AmeriCorps members for College Possible PR activities. The Program Coordinator will assist the Program Director in maintaining member files and accurately reporting member hours. Position requires knowledge of specific AmeriCorps guidelines, making sure all aspects of the program consistently adhere to such guidelines.

Provide Overall Program Support and Oversight: Work with a program team to help guide and develop out AmeriCorps staff, including member recruitment, training and program reporting. Help ensure that AmeriCorps guidelines are followed. Coordinate with the Program Manager and the Director of Programming and Evaluation in tracking, evaluating, and reporting on overall organizational progress. Work with program team to help recruit and select students and staff for the coming program year.

  • Bachelor's degree required.

Related Work Experience:

  • Minimum of two years of full-time work experience required;
  • Supervisory experience preferred;
  • Experience with AmeriCorps, VISTA, or other service programs preferred.

Computer/Software Skills:

  • Well-developed computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and other Office Suite programs as well as experience in database management;
  • Familiarity with Salesforce platform preferred.

Other Skills, Abilities and Requirements:

  • Significant commitment to the mission of helping low-income students earn admission to college and persist toward degree completion;
  • Familiarity with the college admissions process, transfer information, and/or financial aid preferred;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills;
  • Self-starter with the ability to prioritize multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously;
  • Attention to detail, including proofreading and project follow-through;
  • Comfort with data collection, analysis, and a strong focus on results;
  • Willingness to work some evenings and weekends.
